Four Years at New Icon: From Freelancer to Senior Developer (and Everything in Between)

Looking back at March 2022, it’s hard to believe four years have already flown by.

I originally joined New Icon on what was supposed to be a temporary freelance contract. Fresh out of university and eager to prove myself, I didn't entirely know what to expect. What I found was an environment that trusted people who were willing to lean in, learn fast, and take ownership. By November of that year, I officially joined full-time as a Junior Developer, and the ride hasn't really slowed down since.

Four years is a long time in tech, but when I look back at the milestones, it feels like distinct chapters of growth - both as an engineer and a colleague.

The Deep End

My first major test was being handed a long-standing client’s mission-critical Magento platform. At the time, that felt intimidating. Magento and legacy PHP aren't exactly known for gentle learning curves.

Instead of just treading water and fixing bugs, I saw an opportunity to leave things better than I found them. Alongside everyday feature support, I tackled upgrading the underlying servers, updating PHP versions, and untangling release workflows. It was the best crash course in real-world DevOps, Git discipline, and defensive coding I could have asked for. That period taught me one of my core philosophies: software development isn’t just about writing shiny new features; it’s about making systems reliable and sustainable for the people who depend on them.

Navigating Chaos and Solving New Puzzles

Stepping into a Mid-Level role opened up completely new territory. I got to collaborate closely with our Solutions Architect, diving headfirst into modern full-stack web applications with Laravel, Vue, and TypeScript. Designing database schemas, defining API contracts, and thinking about architecture from day one was a huge step forward.

Around this time, I also started naturally gravitating toward mentoring. Supporting colleagues and guiding an intern through their first industry challenges made me realise that technical growth is only half the job - raising the waterline for the team around you is just as rewarding.

This phase also brought one of the most uniquely challenging technical projects of my career: working in a core team on a companion mobile app for physical marine VHF radios. Trying to deliver Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates to hardware operating miles offshore in zero-connectivity maritime environments forces you to think differently. You can’t rely on a simple cloud fetch. We had to bridge mobile data caches, local Wi-Fi hotspots, and Bluetooth protocols to solve physical hardware constraints safely. It was gritty, hands-on, and immensely satisfying when it all clicked.

Then came the real trial by fire: an emergency incident where a client’s platform had been compromised.

Over seven very focused, high-pressure days, we contained the breach, migrated infrastructure, upgraded software stacks, and hardened the entire environment against future attacks. More importantly, we kept communication transparent with the client, walked them through the fix, and rebuilt their confidence. Coming out the other side with their trust intact - and stepping up to Senior Developer earlier this year - was a massive personal turning point. It showed me that resilience, cool-headed problem-solving, and clear communication under pressure is core to any senior developer role.

Designing for the Real World

Stepping into the Senior role in January, the nature of the puzzles shifted to an even wider aperture.

Recently, my work has focused on larger architectural initiatives. That has included reviewing and refining a full product-to-SaaS architecture, before spearheading the actual implementation for an international client - setting up multi-tenant schemas and automated CI/CD pipelines ready for global rollout - to collaborating on a comprehensive, end-to-end system overhaul for a complex enterprise platform.

Alongside writing and reviewing code, I’ve also stepped into participating in technical discovery and architecture workshops directly with clients. Translating an ambitious, non-technical business idea into an elegant, scalable system design before a single line of code is written has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the craft.

Progression, AI, and the Next Generation of Developers

Reaching Senior in under four years has made me reflect a lot on how that progression actually happened. Looking back, the biggest accelerant wasn’t just raw coding speed; it was taking ownership of uncomfortable problems - digging through legacy servers, untangling hardware edge cases, answering the call during a crisis, and listening to clients.

Now, leading our internal AI initiatives, I often think about how the landscape is shifting for the developers following in our footsteps.

AI toolchains are fundamentally changing how we write code, debug, and test. Routine boilerplate and syntax lookup can happen in seconds. But while AI can write a function, it doesn't teach you the intuitive muscle memory that comes from watching a server crash under load, debugging a race condition on an offline radio, or calmly communicating with an anxious client during an outage.

The junior-to-senior journey in the AI era won't be about who can write code the fastest. It will be about who can evaluate system safety, understand data flow, ask the right architectural questions, and take end-to-end ownership. I love that New Icon gives us the space to explore these AI tools pragmatically - using them to amplify our velocity without compromising on engineering rigor and quality.

The Big Takeaway

When people ask what kept me here for four years across four different roles, the answer is simple: trust and momentum.

I’ve never had a year where I wasn’t challenged, and I’ve never felt boxed into a predefined ceiling. From a nervous freelancer diving into a legacy codebase to rolling out AI workflows, New Icon has given me the room to grow, make mistakes, fix them, and take real ownership.
